A note from Neil about this workshop: attendees are encouraged to bring a chapbook’s worth of completed poems to the class, typically around 30 pages in a word document. If you don’t have that many poems you’re proud of OR if you have that many poems but don’t see how they fit together cohesively, no worries, that’s what I’m here for. I’ll give plenty of prompts throughout the workshop, and between our two brains I’m sure we can make all the puzzle pieces fit.

Class Duration: 2 hours via Zoom

Note: If you are gifting a Button U workshop, you MUST enter the recipients email address into the “Gift Message” field while checking out.

June/July Sessions: Performance & the Page w/ Neil Hilborn

In a perfect world, there should be no difference in poems meant for the page or the stage. We live, however, in this imperfect world, so in this workshop we will be examining the qualities that make poems better suited to performance, and how we can bring performative qualities to all our poems, not just the ones meant for the stage. We will analyze techniques from a variety of spoken word performers, and we will write poems from prompts designed to evoke those techniques. If you’ve ever wondered how a poem goes from a notebook to a microphone, this workshop is for you.

August/September Sessions: Right Poems, Right Order w/ Neil Hilborn

The goal of this workshop is for every attendee to come out of it with a complete chapbook. The process of putting together a manuscript can be daunting, so in this workshop Neil will discuss things like how to order poems, choose fonts and cover art, and develop narrative through-lines. Additionally, Neil will edit each attendee’s manuscript and give suggestions on where and how it could be published. If you think you have a book in you, Neil wants to help you let it out.

A note from Neil: attendees are encouraged to bring a chapbook’s worth of completed poems to the class, typically around 30 pages in a word document. If you don’t have that many poems you’re proud of OR if you have that many poems but don’t see how they fit together cohesively, no worries, that’s what I’m here for.
