Let’s Open Up This Pit: The Poetics of Punk, Pop-Punk, and Post-Hardcore
Put on your fishnet gloves, eyeliner, and get ready to mosh! Let’s Open Up This Pit: The Poetics of Punk, Pop-Punk, and Post-Hardcore will excavate songs and albums as text, digging deep into what it means to write about music and how to bring your own unique voice forward through the noise. This four-week generative course will transport us through the musical voids: the awkwardness of teenage years, the rightful anger of the anti-establishment, grief and what we’ve lost, and what keeps us tethered and surviving. Students will be exploring music from heavyweights such as Touché Amoré and My Chemical Romance to Julien Baker, The Linda Lindas, and Bears in Trees. A playlist for this course will be provided.
Content warning: Some of the texts in this course will discuss suicide, sex, abuse, and drug use. Please take care of yourselves!
