A testament from a true American activist, Jared Paul’s gritty collection of poems and essays are a tribute to pulling up your sleeves and learning to use your hands as a shovel. This lyrical memoir sings prayers of protest that echo from empty boxcars and the faces of familiar strangers. Songs From the Bottom of a Mineshaft is a home-cooked meal made on an open fire. Paul’s work is a raw and resilient blueprint. His stories of poverty and artistry, protest and prison, weave the melancholy and hope of the American narrative.

Jared Paul is an organizer, independent journalist, slam poetry champion and Black Box Tapes recording artist from Providence, Rhode Island. His poetry and music are often focused on issues of social and environmental justice and animal rights. As a poet, he has toured internationally in over 200 cities, playing alongside legendary poets, musicians, journalists, and speakers such as Amy Goodman, Bill Clinton, Saul Williams, Sage Francis, Our Lady Peace, Paul Hawken, Jello Biafra, Immortal Technique, Anti-Flag, Atmosphere, The Misfits and many others.
